The Forbidden City; Beijing, China, 2011

A new photo gallery on Beijing is available online!

It is quite hot in China in September. Relative humidity is 100% which feels like 45 degrees celsius! Sometimes with no wind day and night it is hard to imagine what could have been in the capital if all transport was running on gas. This is probably why almost all transport in Beijing is electric (20 million people, not that much of cars though a lot of motos and bicycles, all electric!). Motors do not produce noise thus you have to be very attentive not to get run into))

All apartments have air conditioning. Even in "hutongs" (neighbourhood for poor) almost every apartment has air conditioning, where an apartment is just a room for the whole family. One can say that technically China is almost as advanced as most developed countries.

Some people not having air conditioning suffocant nights sleep outside on folding beds and neither people passing by nor tourist do not disturb them.

In China people are comparatively small, a head less in height than europeans. Though in the subway I have seen some accelerated youngsters almost 6 feet high. Generally men have shaved faces and do not ware beards. Sometimes it is hard to tell an age of a person - 30 or 60.

Public transport in the capital is mainly represented by buses. They are new, do not make noise and are quite ecological. Which is very important in such a big city. In their heat instead of air conditioning in busses they keep windows open. It is interesting that windows start very low and it gives an impression that you can fall out if you do not hold tight.

Chinese people live comfortably in crowd. They spend their everyday live on streets. Which is especially true in hutongs, where people wash themselves, and wash their clothes, cook and eat, meet friends. Sometimes one can notice women shaving their legs. In hutongs there are no individual toilets, only public ones on streets every 50 meters. Event going to toilet is a public process. Running water is outside too. Personal space is minimal. For people from England comfortable space is 1.5 meters, for europeans - 70 cm. Chinese live close one to another and live happily.

They are numerous like ants. Sunday on Tiananmen square you can find yourself surrounded by thousand hundred people. Oh Great Mao!
Tiananmen is the biggest place in Beijing and in the world. One kilometer long and half kilometer wide it can accomodate up to a million people during festivities.

The capital leaves an impression of a splendid and save place. One can walk around in hutongs even at nights, where there are a lot of locals outside eating, talking, relaxing and sometimes singing. Which gives an impression of a big family!

As always welcome to visit my new photo gallery!
